1) Wyenova Annual Vegetarian Xmas Party - this Saturday - 12 December 4 pm - All the vegetarian groups in Christchurch come together at Wyenova Organic Farm once a year to eat, explore the farm and meet each other. Everyone is invited and yes you can bring friends and family. This is a family friendly event with many activities for the children. There are tractor rides, games and a visit from Vegetarian Santa. This will be held rain or shine at Wyenova Organic Farm, Broadfields. (Follow Main South Rd, past Templeton, first turn left onto Waterholes Rd. Wyenova is 2.5km on the left. Look for the balloons on the letter box). Bring a vegan dish (enough food for all the people you are coming with) to share, and your plate, cutlery and own drinks. The CVC raffle will also be drawn on the day at Wyenova and there will be a special prize draw for raffle ticket holders that are there on the day. So bring your change and buy some raffle tickets!

3) Temporary home needed for two goat kids - I have two orphaned/adopted goat kids that need a tem home for a week from 28th January 2010 as I'm going away. If anybody has suitable fenced land with shelter that could take care of them it would be appreciated. Both will be weaned before Jan and youngest will be 5 months old. 4) The Lotus-Heart will be celebrating Christmas with 2 special functions - a Christmas Eve dinner (6-10pm) and Christmas Day lunch (11am-4pm). In addition to our regular menu we will be preparing a special Christmas 3 course meal, prepared for you with love in the peaceful atmosphere of The Lotus-Heart Restaurant. 5) The Vegan Society Is Back ! The Vegan Society has re-formed and is now open to membership at only $20 per year.To join please follow the link and click membership benefits. www.vegansociety.co.nz. 6) University Vege Group needs a new leader - from the beginning of Semester one next year - If you are at university (Canterbury) and are interested please e-mail Emma on disarmed.smiles@gmail.com as until a new leader is found the group shall remain on hold. Cheers

8) One Earth Matters at the 2010 Ellerslie Flower Show - In 2010 we will be creating another exhibition garden for the Ellerslie International Flower Show in Christchurch, with the help of a number of committed sponsors and volunteers. This time we need the help of the people in the form of 2000 individual answers to a question: What do we have to do to salvage the earth? The answers will be incorporated into the garden in a unique and special way. Go to www.oneearthmatters.co.nz and follow the link at the top of the page titled ‘Ellerslie Question’ for instructions. All ages and races are welcome, as is your own interpretation of the question. It’s your story we want to hear. A select few people will be invited to attend a special ceremony to welcome the messages into the garden, just prior to the show opening.
9) SAFE Appeal for Animals! On Friday 18th December and Saturday 19th street appeal collectors around New Zealand will be become part of SAFE's biggest fundraiser of
the year. Will you be one of them? SAFE is calling on the assistance of over 300 collectors in Christchurch to hit the streets and collect donations for SAFE to help animals.

Potato Cakes
Vegan (use vegan marg eg Olivani and soy milk)/Gluten-Free.
350g mashed potatoes
Salt
White pepper
¼ tsp wholegrain mustard
2 tsp chopped fresh parsley
3 tbsp rice flour
½ tsp celery seeds
Oil
• Make some mashed potato with margarine and a dash of milk
• mix in salt, pepper, mustard and chopped parsley.
• Cool the potato mixture completely.
• Season the rice flour with salt, pepper and celery seeds and spread it evenly onto oven-proof baking paper.
• Shape the potato mixture into patties and cover with the flour.
• Fry in oil in a cast iron pan, turning once, until browned on both sides.
• Serve with a light salad and plum/tomato sauce.

1) New Vegetarian Indian Supermarket - Yogiji's Foodmart sells a whole range of nuts, spices, flours, some fresh veggies, lots of frozen veggies and ready cooked vegetarian foods and vegetarian sweets and snacks (made from lentils and spices - yummy and good source of protein). Fresh samosas and chapattis are available on weekend mornings. Owners are lacto-vegetarians. No meat/fish sold in this shop. Central location, just opposite the South City Shopping Centre car park,569B Colombo Street, Ph: 372-3434. Open Monday - Sunday, 10 am - 7 pm.
2) Vegetarian Expo - over 3000 people attended Christchurch's 3rd Vegetarian Expo. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive from both the vegetarian and non vegetarian attendees. thanks to the 75 volunteers who helped organise the day and the many stall holders and the Horticultural Hall for a great venue. We hope you all had a great day. Watch teh www.vegetarianexpo.org.nz site as we plan to post pictures from the event asap.
3) Products for sale at the Christchurch Vegetarian Centre - we are now selling Fair Trade Chocolate ($2.00) and Phoenix organic drinks ($3.50) as well the Animal Free Recipe Book ($25.00), Veg*n Shopper ($9.00) and NZ Vegetarian Society Nutrition charts ($5.00). Pop into our offce at 141 Hereford Street, or email Monica info@vegetarianchristchurch.org.nz if you would like more information on the products we have for sale.
4) Vegan cookbooks and books about animal rights issues - Katipo Books, a non profit workers co-op based in Christchurch/Otautahi has just imported a new range of titles relating to Vegan cooking and animal rights issues. One of our aims is to speacialise in this area and if there is any title you would like to see us stock please let us know. We also hope to provide these books at the cheapest prices possible, for instance we are selling the cookbook How it all Vegan for $34 while Borders is selling it for $56. 5) Support needed for funding for CVC- to help us with our funding applications we often attach letters of support for the Christchurch Vegetarian Centre from both veggie and non veggie members of the public or our own members attesting to what we do and the value of the service we supply to the Christchurch vegetarian community. 6) New Vegetarian Cafe opens in Christchurch - Soul Food, New Regent Street - trendy eating place in stylish New Regent Street. Similar to Soul Food, High Street, offering great cafe food and coffee. Central Location - 22 New Regent Street (between Armagh and Gloucester Streets). Opening hours - Monday -Saturday 8:30 - 4:00 pm.
7) VegE-News - now available for paid members of NZ Vegetarian Society - this is an international newsletter containing interesting news and snippets from al round the world relating to vegetarianism. 8) Vegetarian Women Online Magazine - http://www.vegetarianwomen.com - Independent online magazine promoting vegetarianism and sustainability.
10) Vegetarian BBQ Hire - A vegetarian BBQ is available for hire to Christchurch vegans and vegetarians. It is a meat-free BBQ so you can enjoy a healthy, clean, ethical BBQ with your family and friends. 11) NZ Vegan Shopping Guide available online - a member has kindly made available a shopping guide she has produced for vegan food stuffs, cleaning products & toiletries. Please note this is not a comprehensive guide, but has many products suitable for all vegetarians, including wine, beer & so on. This guide is downloadable. 13) Rescued cats needing homes - Cat Rescue Chch has rescued adult cats currently requiring good homes from 1 year old and up. Some are very friendly; others need quieter homes, as they are a little timid, however they will warm up to you in time.
