Kia ora, bulavanaka and G’day
I’m Hema, aged 12 years old and a member of the Vegetarian Youth Group in Christchurch. I’m a wannabe Vegetarian, which I have been for a while now, but I’ve vowed to become a vegetarian before I’m 13.
The main reasons why I wanted to become a vegetarian is because I know that my health and body will definitely benefit from it and because of the way animals are treated (quote “like meat not animals”) Enough about me now, on with the youth group. The Vegetarian Youth Group began in 2006 ago by my great friend Ella Soryl (her whole family are vegan) and her mum Yolanda and her Aunty Tracey who run the group.
The group currently has 10 members ranging from wannabes (me!), vegetarians and vegans. While at the group, we do many fun and exciting things such as cooking two vegan dishes, (one healthy and nutritious recipe and one… not so healthy like vegan cookies and cakes!). We also explore a vegetarian website of the month, sometimes watch a video about Vegetarianism and food, and also do fun confidence building and team work games and activities.
I really enjoy going to the Vegetarian youth group every month because its great fun, Everyone there is cool, kind and caring, The food is to die for and it’s really helped me going that one step closer to becoming a vegetarian!

Kirsty
My name is Kirsty and I am currently the oldest in the youth group. I love animals, reading, writing, Harry Potter and my sport is swimming. Being a vegetarian does not stop me being a normal, healthy teenager. I changed my diet, and my life, for animals. I am going to go vegan one day but I think that will have to wait because my parents didn't even like the idea of a diet with no meat!
Ingrid Anna
Hi. I’ve been a vegetarian all my life and became a vegan when I was 12. I am 13 now. I pretty much did it for the animals because what is happening to them is so cruel. I like reading, drawing and solving my rubix cube. My favourite food is chocolate!
Kerstin
Hi, I am 12 years old. I am vegan because of animal cruelty. I enjoy chess, maths, reading, athletics, cooking and playing with cats. My favourite foods are pomegranates, skittles, chocolate and vegan berry ice cream.
Rachel
Hi, I am 12 and I’ve been a vegetarian for 4 years. I am the only vegetarian in my family and working towards being a vegan. I love animals and I hate to see them get hurt. I love vegan food, especially vegan chocolate.
Amber
Hello, I’m a 12 year old vegan. I went vegetarian a year ago to save animals and talked my mum and sisters into going vegetarian too. At then end of last year, I went vegan so I could go in the vegan triathlon and to help animals too of course!
Hema
Kia ora. I’m 13 and want to be vegetarian for the animals and my health. I am the first and so far only vegetarian in my family. I’m into art, sports and hanging out with my friends.
Ruby
Kia ora, my name is Ruby and I am 12 years old. I became a vegetarian when I was born because me and my family care about animals and we want to be healthy. I love dogs and little kittens and bunnies. I like to cook dinners for my family that I have learned from the vegetarian youth group. My best one is the Mexican beans and rice and I also make this into tortilla wraps.
Ella
Hey! I’m Ella. I’ve been vegan all my life for animal rights reasons. I have been raised a vegan by my family but I choose to stay vegan because I love animals. My favourite food is avocado sushi. At the moment, I am writing a vegan cookbook for kids with my friend Amber. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen trying out new recipes which is fun.
